Regenerative Braking Unit SRBU
Recover braking energy intelligently instead of converting it into heat
The SRBU-100H is a high-performance regenerative braking unit for modern drive systems. As an efficient regeneration module, when a motor brakes it does not route the electrical energy generated to a braking resistor, but instead feeds it back into the supply grid with high efficiency. This active regeneration reduces energy consumption, lowers operating costs, and at the same time minimizes heat generation in the control cabinet.
Compared to conventional braking solutions, the SRBU-100H enables continuous braking operation with energy regeneration, meaning that even with frequent braking cycles and high braking power, no thermal bottlenecks occur. The recovery of braking energy sustainably increases the energy efficiency of your machines and systems and makes an important contribution to reducing CO₂ emissions.

How the regenerative braking unit works
During deceleration, the motor operates as a generator and feeds the resulting energy back into the DC link of the frequency inverter. If the DC link voltage rises above the set limit value, the regenerative braking unit automatically takes over the energy feedback.
Instead of converting the excess energy into heat via braking resistors, the regenerative module converts it into grid-compliant electrical energy and feeds it back into the supply grid. This keeps the DC link voltage stable, reliably protects the frequency inverter, and the recovered energy can be used by other consumers within the system.
The braking operation with energy regeneration can be carried out either automatically via adjustable switching thresholds or manually via a digital control input. Multiple regenerative units can be operated in parallel depending on power requirements and are suitable for both single drives and complex multi-drive systems with a shared DC link.

Applications
External braking units are used in applications with heavy loads and rapid load changes at the motor in conjunction with changes in speed or direction of rotation. The braking unit protects the frequency inverter from excess energy that is fed back by the motor into the DC link. The SRBU-100H regenerative unit is therefore suitable for all applications in which large amounts of braking energy are generated regularly and economical recovery of this energy is beneficial.
Typical areas of application are:
- Cranes and overhead travelling cranes
- Freight and passenger lifts
- Cable cars
- Machine tools
- High-speed spindles
- Centrifuges
- Roving machines
- Drilling machines
- Winding machines
- Wind power plants
- Hydropower plants
- Logistics and storage systems
- Electric vehicles
- Test benches
- Special-purpose machines
Wherever frequent acceleration and braking occur, the regenerative braking unit ensures economical regeneration and maximum energy efficiency.
Why a regenerative braking unit?
Conventional braking resistors convert the energy generated during braking entirely into heat. This wastes valuable energy resources while increasing cooling requirements and operating costs.
With the SRBU-100H, recovery of braking energy takes place through intelligent regeneration into the power grid. This saves energy, reduces heat generation, and enables continuous braking operation with energy regeneration even in demanding industrial applications.
The SRBU-100H is therefore the ideal regenerative unit for companies that want to operate their machines energy-efficiently, reduce operating costs, and at the same time contribute to sustainable production.
