ST500 | When should I use an EMC output filter with my frequency inverter?

The AC drives have unfiltered outputs. For the majority of applications this gives satisfactory performance, however for a small number of applications output filtering is strongly recommended to be able to increase system functionality, system reliability and system longevity.

These applications include but are not limited to:

  • Motors without frequency converter suitable isolation (e.g. older motors).
  • Long motor cables, up to 200m
  • High capacitance motor cables (e.g. fire protection cables)
  • Several motors connected in parallel to one frequency converter
  • Elimination of high-frequency noise caused by PWM

For motors with insulation not suitable for frequency inverters:

In any case, always check (ask motor manufacturer) the motor specification to ensure that the motor is designed for use on modern frequency inverters!
