What is the difference between calibration and adjustment?
The terms calibration and adjustment are often confused or used interchangeably.
However, there is a fundamental difference:
- Calibration is used to verify and document the performance of a measuring instrument. The measurement deviation is compared with certified standards and carefully documented. A detailed certificate is then issued. Regular calibration helps ensure the quality of your product.
- Adjustment changes the measuring behavior of the device. It is performed if the device fails calibration and the measurement uncertainty deviates too much from the manufacturer’s specifications. The display is then adjusted to restore proper measurement accuracy.
