I can’t establish a connection via RS232. Is the interface defective?

The RS232 interface is quite robust. In most cases, communication issues are caused by incorrect settings or a faulty RS232 cable.

Start by checking the following settings:

  • Is the RS232 interface selected on the device?
  • Is the baud rate set correctly?

If both are correct, the *IDN? command can be used to query the device type. Make sure both LF (Line Feed) and CR (Carriage Return) are sent.

To ensure the null modem cable is not defective (note: a null modem cable with crossed pins 2 and 3 is required), you can replace the cable or test the pins with a multimeter. Again, make sure that pin 2 and 3 are crossed.
