Measurement range

A measuring device reacts on a physical quantity, the quantity to be measured (e.g voltage) and displays a corresponding reading. If several measurement ranges are available an adequate range has to be selected.

The measurement starts in a range that certainly contains the expected measurement reading. In subsequent steps the measurement is repeated in more precise measurement ranges. Usually, the smallest range that still contains the measurement reading provides the highest precision. The actual measuring system typically reads in a limited range only. Different measurement ranges can be obtained by amplification or suppression of the quantity to be measured.
