SMD adapter

Both the terms SMD adapter and SMD tweezers belong to the surface mounting field of electronics. The SMD adapter is a component of the field, while the SMD tweezers are one of the tools for mounting and soldering of components onto a printed circuit board or PCB.

SMD adapters provide an easy to achieve adaptation of SMD ICs in circuits. ICs contain integrated circuits, that is, a microchip composed of a semiconductor based on an electronic circuit. The abbreviation SMD defines a variation of the connection of the microchips. The alternatives are a through-hole mounting THT (Through Hole Technology) or a Surface Mount SMD (Surface Mounted Device). With the first option, wire terminals are used. This requires the connecting wires to be guided through the mounting holes and then soldered to the rear side of the circuit board. With the surface mounting option, the connection points are one and the same as SMD adapters. The result is both space saving and weight reducing, and it does not matter whether it is a pure SMD board. However a disadvantage of SMD components is generally their sensitivity to mechanical impact.

This is because the SMD adapter is a more complex device, which challenges its construction. There are three edge connections which are called vertical VIAs (Vertical Interconnection Access). These are cut to establish an electrical connection between the top, bottom and two side faces of an adapter. During soldering the adapter, the edge contacts must be exactly aligned on the board. The SMD adapter is required for functional compatibility of some interface modules and bridge. In these cases, the devices can still be used by the addition of an adapter. An example of this is the components types MC33290 and L9637. Both these components are incompatible in terms of their function and their location pins. Both the MC33290 and L9637 can now utilise the SMD adapter in the circuits by the simple method of moving the location of the pins. In this way, the adapter sets the terminal pin of the L9637 to match its location on the MC33290. Once this is done, the L9637 is now connected from the unsupported enable line of the L9637 to the positive supply voltage VCC. Because L-lines are not available for the MC33290, this location will remain vacant on the modified L9637.

SMD tweezers are a very important tool when working with SMD elements. These tools allow the SMD components to be held by tweezers while they are soldered. For the most part, SMD tweezers are made ​​of special alloys such as stainless steel. They must also have a high resistance to acids, and in addition have anti-magnetic properties. Usually the alloy will contain traces of chromium and nickel.
