Speed Control

We come across speed control of electric motors everywhere in a modern society. The list of speed control comprises a wide range of appliances, beginning with household electrical appliances used in the garden and garage, and ending with large industrial plants with conveyor belts, pumps and machine tools. We will quickly see how essential and important this type of speed control is for various machines. A sophisticated society can no longer do without an effective way to control speed.

What is a speed control and what does it do?

But what purpose does the electronic speed control serve, exactly? It is used to influence the rotational speed of motors and machinery. This has a direct effect on the operation of the machine and is crucial for the quality and the outcome of the work. When drilling, different rotational speeds must be selected for different materials and for various drill sizes, and in pump installations, the throughput rates must vary, and a conveyor belt must be able to adapt its speed to the workflow. But even a fan motor in an industrial hall has to change its rotational speed and it must be customised to adapt to volume throughput change, according to the needs of the hall. This is where the electronic speed control comes into play. But this is only a small example taken from the wide array of applications for speed control in electric motors and machinery. They are employed in almost every other aspect of every-day life, as well.

Optimal speed control with frequency inverters

As speed controls are effective and economical alternatives in terms of energy consumption, they are used extensively in developing so-called frequency inverters. These devices control the speed of the motor by directly changing the frequency or the amplitude. By using the system to that end, there are hardly any heat losses and the speed control provides numerous programs that allow you to operate the machines. This is very important when you start and break in large electric motors, because the greatest loads on the motor and the power supply occur in these cases. Furthermore, intelligent speed control reduces the maintenance and servicing costs of the plant many times over, thus saving considerable time and money.
